Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

CAIR Statement on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

The California Association for Institutional Research (CAIR) is dedicated to fostering unity and cooperation among all persons having interests and activities related to institutional research and planning in institutions of postsecondary education.

According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), “the term ‘equity’ refers to fairness and justice and is distinguished from equality: Whereas equality means providing the same to all, equity means recognizing that we do not all start from the same place and must acknowledge and make adjustments to imbalances. The process is ongoing, requiring us to identify and overcome intentional and unintentional barriers arising from bias or systemic structures.” Diversity refers to group social differences. Inclusive practices are those that include an active, intentional, meaningful, and equitable engagement across the diversity of our community.

Recognizing the importance of institutional research and planning as a vehicle to support equity, diversity, and inclusion in institutions of postsecondary education, the CAIR Board commits to the following:

  • continuously striving to be equitable and inclusive in the Board’s creation and enactment of policies, practices, and planning.
  • providing an accessible and inclusive forum for the dissemination of information, resources, and the interchange of ideas representing the diverse people and institutions of the institutional research community.
  • raising awareness of the role of institutional research in advancing the work of equity and inclusion in the organizations of CAIR community members.
  • supporting the efforts of institutional researchers as they seek to advocate for equitable and inclusive treatment of the various stakeholders impacted by their work.

The work of diminishing inequity and discrimination must be continuous and deliberate. These commitments require active, intentional, and ongoing attention. The CAIR Board will therefore create a standing Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Advisory Committee chaired by a CAIR Director that is dedicated to ensuring the strategic enactment and ongoing assessment of these commitments.
