He will share how UMGC weathered a dire financial situation six years ago, highlighting the role of IR on this journey and in times of crisis. He’ll also suggest new priorities and areas of focus for IR offices that are especially important as institutions look to use data to inform their planning and navigate this unprecedented crisis.

KC Greaney, PhD

Dr. Greaney will be discussing how in times of disaster, including pandemics, student records and administrative data do not provide sufficient information for necessary planning, but surveys can provide quick, actionable data for immediate response, and for longer term planning. She will share lessons learned from the surveys conducted by Santa Rosa Junior College in response to the devastating North Bay firestorms in 2017, and information about the forthcoming statewide California Community College COVID-19 survey of enrolled students, and all employees.

As any IR/IE Director or Analyst will tell you, crunching numbers, fulfilling institutional requests for data, and accreditation work can take its toll on mental (and eventually, physical) health. This session will cover the issues many Directors and analysts face, the “do’s and don’t’s” to share with those who work outside of IR/IE, and effective coping strategies for moments of high stress.

The featured speakers for this town hall include:

Dr. Margaret T. Bailey, PhD, MBA
Executive Director, Higher Education Board and Strategy Development

Scenario Planning in times of Uncertainty

Dr. Bailey was introduced to crisis management and scenario planning during her navy career beginning at the end of the Vietnam War.  She continued research in crisis management and scenario planning during her masters and doctorate degrees.  She worked in the energy industry during the 1980s, a very volatile decade with oil shocks and was able to introduce scenario planning.  Dr. Bailey began her university teaching career in the 1990s, where strategic planning, crisis management and scenario planning continued to be her primary area of research.  Now she is working with private universities as they navigate the challenges of the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Kim A. Weeden, PhD
Professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology; Director, Center for the Study of Inequality, Cornell University

The Small-World Network of College Classes: Implications for Epidemic Spread on a University Campus.

Dr. Weeden studies the patterns, sources, and consequences of inequality in advanced industrial societies. She, along with Dr. Ben Cornwell, recently posted a working paper on the structure of enrollment networks that connect students and classes. It provides insight on how a virus could spread should universities resume face-to-face instruction in the fall.

HOST:

Monica Malhotra

Director Strategic Analytics, California State University – Office of the Chancellor
